The result of the study of orange spots on the shungite surface

Shungite by its nature is a composite rock, which contains many additional elements. When a stone comes into contact with water, its surface often becomes covered with orange spots.

It has been suggested that these orange spots might be mineral jarosite. We went into the question and let the stone samples be examined in an independent laboratory. Elite and classical shungite were analyzed. The results for both were the same.

Research has shown that the orange spots were caused by iron (Fe).

The stone under study weighed 29.62 g. The mass of the investigated area was 0.018 g, of which 0.004 g was iron. This corresponds to approximately four-thousandths of the tested stone.

Due to moisture, the formation of orange spots on the stone is a completely natural process, since shungite also contains iron. This is evidence of the uniqueness of shungite.

With a normal distribution of stains on a shungite stone, it is completely harmless to use it for water purification and other applications. This can be proved by our studies of shungite water, which we have already carried out several times. It was not possible to determine the increased values of elements harmful to health.

Please note that a high proportion of iron on the stone surface can lead to increased oxidation during water purification.

If the surface of the stone is covered with rust spots by more than about 3%, then the use of this stone for water purification is not recommended.

Shungite very rarely contains such a high percentage of iron. However, this is usually only recognized after the stone is placed in water.
